"The Thwarting of Will Winter" was written for the 2007 May Day celebrations at Headstone Manor in Harrow. Working with a core of three professional actors, audience participation was drawn in from the outset, with children competing for the titles of May King and May Queen, while assisting Jack o' the Woods in his duel with Will Winter.
The play was a farly open piece, with the flexibility for improvisation and inclusion of the unexpected into its presentation. The old folk character of Jack o' the Woods was revived as a personif1cation of the Spring, and the old traditions of electing a May Queen and consort also worked into the drama. And as tradition required, Will Winter, trying to usurp Sring's rightful place, is given his marching orders in no uncertain terms...!
