The Rooster study emerged out of a series of pictures of a cockerel, each progressively pushing away from the figurative initial study. As a magnificent, showy sort of bird, I aimed to give the finished piece a similarly ostentatious appearance, making much of patterning, contrast and colour. The picture was also done on four separate panels, the first on the upper left to the last on the lower right, and all four have a sense of development within themselves.
